A SALFORD teenager who was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago is celebrating winning March’s Advertiser distributor of the month award.
David Magee, 15, who lives in Ashford Road, Barton, tackles all weathers to make sure residents of Eccles get their weekly news.
But for a boy of his age, David has had less than an easy ride in recent years.
Two years ago he was told he had a brain tumour.
The tumour was benign, but David had to be treated at Christie Hospital.
For three months, David’s mum, Tina, and brother, Stephen, had to take over his paper round, but he fought back and went on to raise an amazing £2,121 for Christie’s Young Oncology Unit.
The cricket fan even got to meet his sporting hero Andrew ‘Freddy’ Flintoff with his dad, Mark, on two occasions, once when he was the mascot for England’s team against Sri Lanka at Lords.
The Salford City Academy pupil has to take five lots of medication every day for the rest of his life and attends Christie Hospital for brain scans every six months.
David said: "When it’s sunny I enjoy the paper round but when it’s cold it’s a pain.
"It takes up to one and a half hours to do the round, but I try and get it done as soon as I get in from school and then I study after that.
"I was particularly pleased to win the award because I’ve been doing the round for three years."
When asked what the secret of his success is, he said: "Just be reliable and be quite sociable."
The Die-Hard fan said he is enjoying the prospect of his £25 prize which he wishes he could use to pay for a dream holiday to New York, but is happy to save up for a new pair of trainers or a games console instead.
