Another double from unstoppable Wayne Rooney and a late header from Dimitar Berbatov fired Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League.
Rooney hit a brace to take his tally for the season up to 32 and sink Fulham's challenge at Old Trafford, while Bulgarian forward Berbatov headed home a third with minutes remaining.
United are now two points clear of Chelsea and Arsenal, although Chelsea have a game in hand.
It has come to that stage in the season where every round of fixtures bring their own pressure.
And, on the occasion chosen to mark Old Trafford’s 100th birthday, it was United needing to follow Chelsea and Arsenal, who after initial struggles, had ended up with three points Saturday.
On the face of it, a Fulham side in the middle of a titanic Europa League tie with Juventus would appear to be the perfect opponents.
Yet, as Ferguson pointed out in the build-up, Roy Hodgson has revolutionised life at Craven Cottage and masterminded a three-goal victory over these same opponents in December.
At the time, United were severely weakened by a loss of defenders.
With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic back those problems are now at an end. On this occasion, it was United’s attack that misfired.
The hosts had plenty of possession and got into the right areas often enough.
But at some stage, all their first half attacks broke down.
Only twice could the Fulham defence take complete credit.
A collective effort ensured Rooney did not profit when Darren Fletcher elected to square the ball after charging into the box to reach Berbatov’s return pass.
Mark Schwarzer denied Rooney later in the half with a fabulous one-handed save after the England man had curled a shot goalwards from 20 yards.
Restored to the starting line-up after missing the midweek demolition of AC Milan, Berbatov had no-one to blame but himself for failing to convert his best chances, both of which were headers.
Berbatov chance
True, that part of the game is not the Bulgarian’s strong point but, after finding space deep inside the Fulham box, he should have done better after being picked out by Antonio Valencia and Nani respectively.
Rooney was grumbling at half-time after being hauled down by Stephen Kelly without winning a penalty. He was all smiles 29 seconds after the restart though.
A scrappy build-up saw Berbatov nod the ball into his strike partner’s path. Rooney then fed Nani before advancing into the big hole Fulham’s disorientated defence had left.
Once Nani delivered the return pass back into exactly the same area, the outcome was inevitable.
With the home side in front, so was the result.
Anxiety remained though as long as the wait for a second continued.
Rooney and Berbatov both failed to profit from decent half chances, in the latter man’s case an acrobatic volley from Valencia’s cross that flew narrowly wide.
At least they could claim to have got somewhere near the goal, unlike Patrice Evra, who screwed his 25-yard shot so wide it resulted in a Fulham throw.
The value of having Ferdinand and Vidic back in harness was seen as the clock ticked down.
Starved of possession and chances, Bobby Zamora had been given little opportunity to press home his England credentials.
But when he ran onto a flick from substitute Eric Nevland, Zamora must have felt it was the moment he had waited for.
Instead, after being caught out by the initial move, Vidic darted back and snuffed out the opportunity with a thunderous challenge.
For Zamora it was a frustrating afternoon.
It looked like being the same for Berbatov after he failed to convert Park Ji-sung’s neat cross.
But after creating yet another goal for Rooney with a neat cut-back seven minutes from time, the £30.75million man finally located the target himself, from Park’s cross, to complete a scoreline more in keeping with the one-sided nature of proceedings.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.

Keep it going, great football and a 3-0 result is great for goal difference as well. Move of the game for me was Park on the left running in against two defenders stabbing the ball in between them outside of the boot onto Berbas head, would have been a sick goal.

plus the ability to be patient and continue pressing. 68% possession and 33 attempts on goal [ 19 on target ] tells its own story.
Berbs had a very good game today. He was a lot more industrious than usual and his link up play was superb. He has a very languid style of play on the ball,is extremely skillful and a very intelligent player,as he showed in this game. He really deserved his goal. He can appear lazy when he does not have the ball, but in recent performances he has worked harder.
Nani was double teamed by Fulham for most of the game. He is improving, but it remains to be seen if he can add some thought to his instinctive approach. He gets into good positions but is still so wasteful with the final ball. I like him though, and hope he can develop further.
Rooney of course was brilliant, Fletcher outstanding, Carrick assured in midfield. The defence is getting back to its obdurate best. We have some tough games coming up. Every one is a cup final between now and the end of the season. It's the way we like it!

On the subject of player acquisitions I saw Fiorentina play Napoli yesterday and Jovetic is tall, strong, young and a very gifted midfielder. Comes up for crosses and corners with his height, great passer of the ball, very intelligent and just looks the part, he can really work the Gerrard role in a 4 5 1 / 4 3 3 formation, plus he would work nicely with Fletch in midfield in a 4 4 2
Would love him, Rodwell and a left winger, then id be happy:p

MOM for me was Berbatov !

Nani was such a threat. I get tired of people saying he doesn't deliver. He put several shots on our forwards' heads. It seems unless we score every time he crosses then he's stuck with the "no delivery" tag.
He could do something about his corners, mind. Could it be because the boardings are so tight there is no room for an appropriate run-up? He certainly seems to only take a couple of steps before swinging.
Another authorative display by SuperFletch. Too bad about his late effort that was stunningly tipped over by Schwarzer.
Funniest moment of the match was when Evra's 'shot' went out for a goal-kick, the commentator said: "...and this is the right-footed shot of a left-back who hasn't scored in 3 years!"
Come to think of it, as much as Valencia gets stick for not using his left foot, Evra gets completely away with having no right foot shot whatsoever.

i am sure jovtic is more of a second striker then a midfielder. what we need is proper technically gifted play-maker who can turn with the ball under pressure and recieve it in tight spaces. we also dont have anyone scoring from midfield and those would( modric&gurcouff).
end of season why not make a bid for higuain and offer spurs berbatov a swap deal for modric? would also love to have di maria! what a player.
