CARLY NEEDHAM ran a calculated race to finish third and take the bronze medal in the North of England Cross Country Championships at Roundhay Park, Leeds, last Saturday.

The women’s race was run over eight kilometres on an undulating parkland course which was surprisingly dry.

Following her recent international experience, Needham ran with confidence and was placed second after the first circuit of the two lap course.

Her third place was an outstanding achievement and a springboard for future races.

Josefa Terim ran a good race in support, with Brenda Robinson the final Rochdale runner.

The men competed over three laps of the same course, covering 12 kilometres.

Chris Leach ran his usual dependable race to finish first Rochdale counter, while Andy McDougal, pictured right, showed a return to form by finishing ahead of Kris Robinson, Ray Dalby and club chairman Phil Roberts. Both Rochdale teams were depleted by illness and didn’t count in the team scoring.

Harriers wore their colours with strength and honour and now look forward to the last major cross country event of the season, the National Championships at Alton Towers on 23 February.
