Keith Hill believes he will have to factor the state of Spotland’s pitch into his tactical planning over the next few games.
Hill employed a three-man midfield to combat a sticky surface at the Moss Rose on Saturday, where Dale beat Macclesfield 1-0 to go five points clear at the top of League Two.
And the Spotland chief is braced for a run of games on poor pitches – including Dale’s own.
Speaking ahead of last night’s scheduled fixture at home to Rotherham, Hill spoke of his disappointment that Hornets were using the pitch just two days before the crucial match against fellow title contenders.
"I am somewhat dismayed that we have rugby being played again on our pitch," he said.
"I just don’t understand it – surely something can be done? No disrespect to the rugby, but when they open the gates 200 supporters turn up. That pitch is conducive to rugby and rugby alone – it’s not conducive to the style of football we want to play. Everybody should be pulling together in our pursuit of trying to get promotion. It seems so inconsiderate that our pitch is going to be ruined for Tuesday night’s game. We want good football pitches and we’re not going to get one for a while, so it’s a consideration with respect to changing tactics."
Nat Brown’s own goal proved decisive at the weekend as Dale bounced back from defeat against Bradford City days earlier. Though the margin of victory was narrow, Dale were good value for their 11th win from the last 16 games. It was just the response Hill was looking for.
"We’ve won 20 games so far and I don’t believe the lads get the credit they deserve," he said. "Some things upset you in football and to suggest we are not the real deal somewhat upsets me and the players. It was probably a response to half the crowd leaving before the end of the game last Tuesday’s game against Bradford. Macclesfield huffed and puffed in the second half and threw a lot of things into the box, but we defended excellently and we had to deal with injury situations."

Both Hornets and Dale are tenants and as such the following statement
Mr Hill as made regarding Dale as owners of the pitch also Mr Hills comments
as to how many turn up at Rugby he needs to get his facts right before he makes such statments
Again this doesnt help good relations of the two clubs who are BOTH tenants at spotland

Dale play away games on many pitches inferior to that of Spotland so his whining should equally be directed at those clubs too!
What does he expect Hornets to do, forfeit their league and Challenge Cup games just to suit his ends? He really needs to look at the terms of co-ownership and being co-tenants of Spotland, it's a fact of life and wo betide Hornets next season when Dale go up into the 1st division, his bellyaching will just get worse!

The pitch looked shocking after Sundays game. As a somebody said to me "you won't be playing good football on that on Tuesday night". But the groundstaff have worked miracles again this year. The work paid for by the football club directors to redo the drainage system two years ago has been fairly successful. The groundstaff did a great job on the pitch before last night and 2 days of sunshine helped. In the end both Dale and Rotherham were able to play the ball on the ground and entertain us all.
I don't know how to solve the dilema. But there is no equal partnership. One club owns part of the stadium and drives 90% of its revenue. The other pays rent. Sad really. I don't know what will happen in the future.

Attractive football. Loads of goals. The superb Keith Hill.
The manager has every right to critisise the state of the Spotland pitch.
As a Rochdalian, I am aware of the situation they sadly find themselves in now.
Fact. Dale will need a better pitch when they play in the dizzy heights of the 1st Division (sounds good eh!).
Fact. Hornets could merge with Mayfield and pool their respective resources.
Keith Hill is quite right to voice his concerns about the pitch because he is fully aware that next year it's going to get harder to win matches.
Give him(and Dave Flitcroft) the opportunity to keep the dream alive...

I do honestly hope the Dale do it I really do but to start lashing out at Hornets is poor form, make no mistake this bloke will be off as soon as a club with more £ come along, he has done nothing but winge about the fans, the board other clubs sniffing round his squad, come on Keith get a grip and concentrate on keeping your squad focused.
