Teenager Craig Dawson provided a timely boost for Rochdale ahead of their game against Rotherham by agreeing a new contract at Spotland.

The widely-coveted defender, who attracted a £250,000 bid from Scunthorpe in January, has extended his deal until the summer of 2012.

The former Radcliffe Borough starlet is happy to continue learning his trade at the club he has supported since childhood, saying: "Everyone knows I'm from Rochdale and I want to see our team progress and under Keith Hill and Dave Flitcroft it has done every year they have been in charge."

Hill's men face title rivals Rotherham at Spotland this evening looking to increase their five-point lead at the top of League Two.

Dale chief Hill is concerned about the Spotland surface and angry that fellow Spotland tenants Hornets RL played on Sunday, adding: "I am somewhat dismayed that we have rugby being played again on our pitch."
