KEITH HILL insisted he would not be getting carried away by Tuesday’s 6-1 win over Chester – nor would he be reading too much into Aldershot’s midweek defeat at the hands of Chesterfield.
Hill was there to watch today’s opponents beaten 5-1 at Saltergate, but said the result did not reflect the Shots’ obvious ability.
"They are a better team than Wednesday’s result implied," he said.
"They have some very dangerous and capable players and had a penalty just after half time which, had they scored, could have put a whole different slant on the game.
"They were chasing the match late on but at no stage did they stop chasing. But in going for the equaliser they perhaps opened up and Chesterfield were able to exploit that.
"There is no pressure on Aldershot – or Exeter City – this season, because whatever they do is going to be a success after being promoted.
"They can enjoy it like Morecambe did last season and they are a very good footballing team who play without fear.
"Not too many managers in this division will know an awful lot about them but as the season develops we will know more and more about both Aldershot and Exeter. It represents a stern test for us on Saturday – they often talk about after the Lord Mayor’s Show, and we have to guard against that."
Aldershot started the season reasonably well but have lost their last five league fixtures, culminating in Wednesday’s 5-1 defeat at Chesterfield.
Manager Gary Waddock apologised to the travelling supporters after the match and suggested he will make changes to the line-up for today’s game against Dale – but ultimately he is confident his players can turn around their current dip in form.
"I normally explain to players why I leave them out of the side on a one to one basis," he said. "I know that whatever team I pick against Rochdale there will be no need for reasons why I have left them out.
"We are not getting clean sheets and good sides have to do that or score more goals than the opposition. At the moment we are not doing neither.
"I will back this group of players though. They have done exceptionally well to get to where we are.
"There is a lot of quality in that dressing room and at the moment we are going through a sticky patch and I know they will come through this."
