The postponement of Boxing Day’s game at Tranmere Rovers brought a smile to at least one face in the Rochdale camp. The League One clash was called off after a section of corrugated roofing over the main stand at Prenton Park collapsed in high winds.

It meant caretaker boss Chris Beech’s management debut had to be put on hold, but the news was a bit of a bonus for Birkenhead-born skipper Gary Jones. He had been set to miss the game through illness and was not too disheartened when the call came in from boss Beech telling him the fixture was off.
