£50,000 raised so far in Rochdale for Pakistan flood appeal

CO-ORDINATED effort: Imran Mohammed has combined the fundraising at Rochdale’s mosques to reach an incredible £50,000

The MP for Rochdale has joined with the town's mosques in calling on the borough to donate to the emergency appeal to help the flood victims in Pakistan - £50,000 has already been raised in Rochdale.

A well co-ordinated campaign has seen the town's 14 mosques donate generously towards the disaster appeal.

Now MP Simon Danczuk is calling on the wider community, as a matter of urgency, to become more involved in what has turned into a humanitarian disaster.

Imran Mohammed, who is coordinating the appeal among the Rochdale mosques, said: "From reading some of the blog sites, there seems to have been a reluctance among some of the wider community to become involved in this appeal because of ridiculous claims that the money raised would go towards things like funding terrorism

"I would urge people to donate what they can, but to ensure it gets to the people who need it most, it should be sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee, who work with well known charities which include Oxfam, in Pakistan."

Mr Mohammed said each mosque had its own identified charities, to which the monies already raised by the various congregations, would be sent.

Mr Danczuk said: "I am pleased to hear that people across Rochdale have donated generously to support the Pakistan flood victims. I have made a donation and I am encouraging everyone I know to do the same.

"The United Nations is calling this the worst humanitarian crisis in recent history in which there have been 1,600 deaths and millions more people displaced. It's hard to imagine the level of misery that people are experiencing there."

ROCHDALE duo, Maz and Ziggy will be helping at a charity car wash for the Pakistan Floods Appeal on Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and August 15 August between 9am and 6pm. As British/Asian role models in their home town of Rochdale, Bonafide are inviting all their fans to come down and show support. The charity car wash will be held at Express Car Wash, Watts Street (off Regent Street), Rochdale. All proceeds will be donated to the Appeal.

Charity begins at home, they say; we hard floods in this country this week and we are likely to get more before the season's out. We are seeing in the media that very little of the aid sent to pakistan is reaching those for whom it is designated. It would seem that the taliban are the people who are benefitting from any aid sent from this and other countries.

Thus, logically and realistically, this £50K is designated, knowingly to fund the activities of the taliban and enemies of this country because we know that very little if any is reaching those genuinely in need.

Why should we donate to a country that spends millions developing Nuclear Weapons... anyway, they don`t appreciate it as they`ll continue to bad mouth us.

Tell me HH Judge Mental, Chavdale, do people in Rochdale go on special moron courses to come out with this ill informed twaddle?

Twenty million homeless due to climate change is that not common cause for humanitarian action.

And if you can be bothered to actually learn some real history you'd be aware that the biggest funder of the Taliban [which actually means student] was the American CIA who funded them to the tune of $BILLIONS and originally set them up to fight the USSR when they invaded Afghanistan in the 1980's .

And if you find some time to read the reports from OXFAM and the UNITED NATIONS or listen to the BBC WORLD SERVICE rather than really on misinformation and hearsay you might actually have a clue what you are talking about...

Give me strength !!!!

@ HH Judge Chavdale

So basically your saying "dont donate because it will go to Taliban". What an absurd comment. As always you don’t see the generosity of the Rochdale people (and the people of England). Most of the money through charities and DEC goes straight to the people. Its backwards thinking people like you with your stupid thoughts that gets us nowhere.

I urge everyone to donate through charities and DEC. The people of Pakistan need our help.

Although i do not agree with hh judgemental a lot of the money donated does fall into the wrong hands, corrupt officials ect but sadly this happens everywhere.Calling the bloke a racist though is totally out of order and ridiculous.

Well said, HH Judge Mental.
The correspondent who claims that you are "racist" is well off the mark.
We need to look after OUR people: the young, old and infirm.
We need to look after troops, fighting in Afghanistan for what? A corrupt Afghani government, who support the Al Qeada andf Taliban who are hell-bent to kill British people.
Those people how collect for charity need to think about our people first. Remember, much of money collected for foreign "charities" end up in the hands of the corrupt.
We need to support our security forces in at home to protect us from foreign and some home-grown terrorists.
I am not a "RACIST". I support Britain and the British way of life.

Pakistan can afford Nuclear Weapons therefore it should as a country be able to take car of it's own folk.

I would hazard a guess that 50k a week gets sent back to Pakistan from Rochdale residents via the Western Union service anyway. Disaster or no disaster.

As Judge Mental states, charity begins at home.

Like so many people, I will not donate even a penny to the flood relief.
While people were in the floods, caused by their guilt and greed by destroying the landscape so causing the looks, the Prime Minster of Pakistan and his entourage live in the lap of luxury, thanks to our government.
Prime minister Cameron is right: Pakistan harbour terrorists. We British people must not support those terrorists.
Keep our money and food for British people. There are many poor people in Rochdale and cities like Manchester who need our help.

Well done to all the mosques and local communities that have showed their much needed support for the Pakistan appeal. Like most people from Rochdale it is great to see so many people showing cohesion at its best. So many non-muslims from Rochdale have all helped in donate money and help support the families who have lost everything in Pakistan. Their will always be negative views towards positive (that is life) but we as proud Rochdalians are more than happy in showing the rest of our local neighbours Unity at its best. For those who voluntarily went door to door asking for donations, well done, for those who carried out events in aid of charity, well done... Keep up the great work guys and hold your head up high...
