ROCHDALIANS are being urged to secure their homes after the number of burglaries rose by more than 10 per cent last month.
There were 155 burglaries in May compared to 137 in the same month last year, with 53 of those break-ins the result of people leaving doors and windows unlocked.
Now police are advising residents to take action to thwart the thieves.
Sergeant Philip Barlow said: "We know that in warmer weather people like to leave their windows open but our advice to the public is to ensure that all vulnerable windows and doors are kept locked even when you are in your home.
"Our research shows that one in three burglaries happen as a result of people leaving their windows open like this and by taking these simple precautions you can prevent yourself from being a victim of crime."
In a bid to tackle the problem police community support officers will be patrolling areas looking for homes that are at risk and posting warning cards through letter boxes.
Rochdale community safety officer Lee Durrant added: "The majority of crimes can be avoided if people take a few extra precautions to protect their property.
"Simple things like keeping valuables out of sight and storing away garden furniture and equipment in a secure shed can reduce your chances of being a victim this summer."

- Install sensor lights that switch on automatically when movement is detected around your property.
- Do not leave a spare key concealed anywhere near the front door.
- Store keys away from the front door and out of sight.
