A CLUB has hit back at rumours that it could be forced to close.

Members of the Brickcroft Social Club were frustrated by rumours circulating around other clubs in Rochdale that it could be shut down.

They say they have no idea what prompted the claims, but have insisted that they are here to stay.

Around 100 members of the pensioners’ club, which meets at the High Street venue, enjoyed a belated Christmas party last month and the group has lots of activities planned over forthcoming months.

Julie Kidd, a member of the ladies’ committee, said: "We first heard the rumours in November and were really shocked by what people were saying.

"We want to put the rumours to bed once and for all and tell everyone that we are not going anywhere.

"If anything, we are getting stronger and stronger and we are opening on Friday nights for live performances.

"A lot of clubs don’t offer that so we are proud to be able to put on live entertainment."

Even though times are tough in the leisure and entertainment trade, the Brickcroft hopes to buck the trend and continue to attract large crowds.

Ms Kidd added: "There is a recession so it’s difficult for most places at the moment but this kind of place helps to cheer people up.

"We are always happy to welcome new members and anyone that wants to join just needs to visit the club or speak to an existing member."
