A NORDEN taxi driver says he is at the end of his tether with badly-repaired road surfaces.

Warren Holt says streets across Rochdale are in a bad way and he is particularly concerned about a 200 metre stretch at the bottom of Woodhouse Lane.

He says this part of the lane, from the junction at the cenotaph to Knowl Drive, has at least a dozen potholes.

Mr Holt, of Ellis Fold, says some are showing through to the cobbles and are approximately three inches deep.

In the last year he has had his taxi in the garage twice to have new coil springs fitted, which has cost in the region of £300.

He believes that the damage to the offside coil spring last July and the nearside just a few weeks ago was brought on by the potholes.

Mr Holt regularly makes journeys up and down Woodhouse Lane, sometimes four times a day.

Several years ago Ellis Fold and surrounding streets were re-surfaced, but Mr Holt says Woodhouse Lane may need ripping up and repairing more thoroughly.

Last week he noticed that the council had re-painted yellow lines in Woodhouse Lane, but the potholes remained untouched.

He said: "The council has painted new double yellow lines but you would have thought they would have spent the money on filling in the potholes."

Terry Leedham, highways maintenance and street lighting manager for Rochdale Council, said: "We have instructed contractors to carry out the work at the bottom of Woodhouse Lane and it is on the list of work to be done.

"Given the recent adverse weather and ice, it has not been possible to perform the work yet.

"However, once they get the opportunity, repairs will be carried out."
