HUNDREDS of shoppers watched the festive season get underway when a shopping centre switched on its Christmas lights.

Families flocked to see Father Christmas and Rochdale AFC’s mascot Desmond the Dragon being given the honour of turning on the dazzling lights at the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.

A series of competitions and challenges took place throughout the afternoon with goodie bags handed out to young members of the audience.

A spokeswoman for the shopping centre said that the event was a huge success and provided a welcome boost for businesses.

She said: "We had lots of activities taking place on the day and we were very pleased with the fantastic turnout.

"Thousands of people came along to see the switch-on and we were grateful to Desmond the Dragon and Father Christmas for turning on the lights.

"We are hoping for another excellent festive period and are planning additional events to celebrate Christmas at the shopping centre."

A festive talent competition, the Xmas Factor, for local schools and community groups is due to start at 6pm on Thursday 27 November.
