THE achievements of Rochdale Football Club have been honoured with the presentation of the Freedom of the Borough.
The highest accolade that the council can bestow on a person or organisation was awarded to the club during a glittering ceremony at the Town Hall.
Club director Graham Morris received an inscribed scroll inside a solid silver casket from the council chief executive Roger Ellis.
More than 200 people attended the ceremony, including club manager Keith Hill, his assistant David Flitcroft, current players, ground staff and Rochdale MP Paul Rowen.
Councillor Irene Davidson spoke on behalf of the leader of Rochdale Council, Councillor Alan Taylor, who said he wanted to put on record his thanks to the players and management at Rochdale Football Club.
Councillor Davidson said: "I know what a significant contribution the club have made to our borough, and the vital role they play in the community. I also know how dedicated their supporters are. I hope this is seen as a big thank you to the club and the supporters."
The club was founded on 15 May 1907 following the liquidation of Rochdale Athletic and Rochdale Town.
In May this year the club made its first ever appearance at Wembley Stadium, an exciting end to the centenary season.
Councillor Ashley Dearnley, leader of the Conservative group, said that the Freedom of the Borough is a wonderful achievement to celebrate over 100 years as a football club.
He said: "They have always done their very best for the town and have brought a great deal of pleasure to thousands of people over the last century … and we all look forward to their future success."
Councillor Colin Lambert, leader of the Labour group, said that for Rochdale AFC to celebrate 100 years as a sporting club is a magnificent achievement.
He said: "Sport is an important part of our community. Many local sports teams across the borough involve thousands of youngsters – and those not so young – every week. The club’s involvement with schools and community groups shows their commitment to being more than just a professional football club and I feel this recognition is well deserved."
The mayor, Councillor Robin Parker, paid tribute to the club before drawing the ceremony to a close.
He said: "I’d like you all to join with me and say three words … up the Dale!"
