A COUNCILLOR has vigorously denied claims he showed a police officer indecent material.
Speaking for the first time about the allegation, Milnrow and Newhey Councillor Denis Whittle said he was 'shocked' at the claim but admitted sharing jokes that were in bad taste.
Councillor Whittle was alleged to have shown the policewoman inappropriate material on his mobile phone when she visited his home.
"I was shocked to hear these allegations and I completely deny them," he said.
"Yes, I accept that the jokes I showed her were unacceptable and I will be careful in future.
"A number of people have contacted me with their support and I thank them.
"The mobile phone I used was my wife's and she is puzzled by this story."
Councillor Whittle released the statement following a meeting with the council leader, Councillor Alan Taylor and Rochdale's Chief Executive Roger Ellis.
The police have also confirmed he is not currently the subject of any criminal investigation.
Cllr Taylor said: "We met with Denis and although he has vigorously denied the offence of showing her such material he accepts that his jokes were not in bad taste.
"I have accepted his explanation but we have warned him about his future conduct."
