A FORMER Manchester United star made a flying visit to kick off the start of a new era for the Soccer Village.

Alex Stepney, the goalkeeper from the 1968 European Cup winning team, made an appearance on Wednesday night to celebrate the expansion of the popular sports centre in Milnrow.

The Soccer Village already attracts more than 2,500 visitors each week and it’s hoped that more budding football stars will descend on Rochdale following the relaunch.

Mr Stepney spent three hours signing autographs, answering questions and meeting Manchester United supporters, including co-owner Brett Beresford.

Mr Beresford said: "It was a huge honour to meet Alex, especially because I’m a big United supporter.

"He was a gentleman and I was lucky to sit next to him during the dinner. He was very honest and happily answered questions. He talked about playing against the great Eusebio in the 1968 final when United beat Benfica and it was a privilege to enjoy his company for so long."

Following the relaunch, the on-site restaurant, previously run by the last owners of the former Birchinley Manor equestrian centre, has become part of the Soccer Village.

The work has taken two months to complete and the complex has undergone an extensive refurbishment. A camera crew from Channel M was also there to mark the occasion and Mr Beresford enjoyed a few moments of fame when he was interviewed for a programme.

He added: "I’m not sure I’m a natural on camera yet but it was nice that they came down for the relaunch.

"I hope that we’ll continue to do well and we’re looking forward to more dinners with football legends over the next few months."

Two more former Manchester United stars, Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside, are next in line for an appearance on 26 February from 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at £24.50 and, for more details, contact the Soccer Village on 644484.
