IT WAS the out-of-towners who stormed to success in the second round of the Back Door Music Project’s battle of the bands.

Blood Sunset from Bury easily took first place with a unanimous vote by judges.

However, there were some worthy offerings by the three other bands on the bill, even if no one quite matched Blood Sunset in enthusiasm or confidence.

The unwelcome job of rallying the crowd fell to first band up, Rochdale’s Mosh.com.

The group had a sound reminiscent of US girly rockers, The Donnas.

They pulled off a set of convincing covers, including songs by the Hives and Rage Against the Machine, no small feat for a female singer.

But ultimately they lost points for performing only one of their own tracks and ended up leaving judges little choice but to place them fourth.

Contrast, again local lads, were next up and what they lacked in polish they made up for in originality.

The three piece made full use of their effects pedals offered up an electronic indie sound, almost avant garde at times.

The set featured mainly their own songs and ultimately they were one of the more interesting bands on the night.

Then Blood Sunset took to the stage and as soon as they kicked off it was clear they meant business.

The cocky lead singer assured his audience that if they didn't know who they were now, in a few years time they would.

Unleashing a wall of noise the heavy metal six piece produced some well written songs including a very presentable ballad.

Incredibly it was only the Bury band’s second gig, but unfortunately for the others it seemed it was all over.

The night ended with Fresh Craving Supermen from Heywood.

Their brand of punk and emo styled songs went down a treat with the crowd.

Although, maybe it was nerves, or that they were thrown by Mosh.com already having nailed the track but their Killing in the Name Of could have done with a bit more of the raw anger intended by the song.

But in the end there was simply no contest and it’s Blood Sunset who will be bringing their heavy metal mayhem to the final.
