Snapshot in time of Brimrod pupils

SCHOOL memories ... a class at Brimrod Secondary Modern school taken in 1949 – which had to be re-taken after one of the pupils on the front row moved his arm as the photographer opened the shutter – shows Miss Joan Oldfield and headteacher Peter Wilmott.

MEMORIES today of Brimrod Secondary Modern School not long after the end of the Second World War.

They were sent in to the Observer by a former pupil, Sylvia Ward, formerly Sylvia Jackson, who still lives in the area, in Bruce Street, Sudden.

The first is a class photo from 1949 and shows teacher Miss Joan Oldfield and the headteacher, Peter Wilmott.

This particular portrait was later re-done because one unfortunate lad – a boy by the name of Tommy Haigherty – inadvertently blurred the image by moving his arm just as the photographer opened the shutter!

Our other photograph of a class at Brimrod is of form 4A and was taken in 1951.

Headteacher Mr Wilmott is still leading the school on the right of the picture, while teacher Ken Hamer is on the left.

Mrs Ward is sitting next to Mr Hamer on the left of the photo.

I read with interest the article on Brimrod School just after the war. The headmaster is my Father Peter Wilmot, note spelling of surname! Sadly he passed away in February 1983 at Rochdale Golf Club. We all moved to the south of England in 1956 as Dad had been appointed Head of a brand new Secondary School in Chatham, Kent. He retired and returned to live in Rochdale until his early and unexpected death at the age of 68. Mum continued to live in Rochdale until her death in 2006 days short of her 90th Birthday. My brother has lived in Australia for 46 years and I retired last year. Neither of us followed Father into teaching but I did marry a teacher. I heard about your feature from one of my cousins who still lives in Rochdale. I hope this is of interest to you.

That is so cool. Thats what am trying to find with my old school, St Joseph's R C High Rocdale 1965-68-69.In Autralia now, snice .october 1969

The photos brought back lots of memories, I was in Sylvia's class and they were the good times, I now live in Australia and will be visiting Rochdale in August 2010 would love to meet a few of the old classmates if it could be possible ,
