Kolarov is in that side because he can whip in a decent cross, he can occasionally take on and beat a defender and, although Sunday wasn't a good example, he can send over a decent corner as well as hit the target from 25 yards. The problem these days is that you don't get defenders like you did. But the ones we used to get were there to defend, not attack. Now you get ones who can defend and can't get forward. You get ones who are ok or very good forward but can't defend (Micah Richards) but you rarely get ones who can do both. Mancini has almost done a Hodgson in that he has picked the better attacking defender further up and popped the better defensive one further back although the use of Milner for England is more to cover up the deficiencies of Johnson than for any positive intent. I like them both and seeing as I can't think of any top left back that we should be trying to sign, and Mancini's clear decision is that he is not going to have wingers, I doubt anything is likely to change much anytime soon.
