I thought the Myan calender runs out on 21st i.e. the Winter Solstice.
How many people panick on December 31st when their Gregorian calender runs out only to be relieved the next day when the new one is put up. The Myans calculated their calender some 3000 years ago, I doubt they would have been that bothered about running out of room, they probably thought that they would update it nearer the time.
