In The Wire the police were shown as institutionally corrupt, happy (with one exception) to do their political master's bidding; officers were prone to violent outbursts and incompetance, to use the police force as means to settle personal vendettas and the main protagonist took to inventing crimes he could solve, rather than investigate the dozens of murders by the drug dealing gang.
