@Graham Burt - good point, it seems that football takes over-riding priority, with rugby, cross-country and a bit of basketball and athletics thrown in, but there is so much more out there. One school in (I believe) Sheffield has just built it's own velodrome - how cool is that? However, one of the things missing is often the skills to teach it. I remember being told to 'just try' a fosberry flop! I seem to recall much the same advice for the other sports, even football - the kids who just take to it are looked upon favourably, with actual tuition of skills rather questionable.
