Politicians make all the right noises but when it comes down to it they don’t really care about road casualties and deaths. For years they have relied on speed cameras to enforce the law and introduced the Highways Agency Patrol Officers to patrol the main routes. Sadly Cameras only detect speed and have no real effect with general driving standards, The Highways Agency have a similar livery to the police but no powers. Over time they have reduced the numbers of traffic police officers there is little visible presence and as such there is no deterrent to poor driving standards.

The reduction in casualties has nothing to do with the level of policing on the roads as Police Chiefs have always seen Traffic Policing as a low priority. The reduction is down to the safety features fitted to cars and more importantly the advances in Ambulance and Hospital care.

More priority needs to be placed on have the correct level of policing on our roads, this will influence the standards of driving and will also help in deterring thieves from using the roads.

Time for a change in Police Chiefs and instead of promoting political puppets let’s start promoting and encouraging real police officers.
