Using terms like "Beatings book" and "Thrashed" for poor behaviour are a bit extreme. I can imagine in the future when no one is locked up for committing crimes, terms such as encarserated and starved of their freedom and other superlatives to describe how the poor urchins who raped pillaged and murdered were subjected to.

I'll bet the poor behaviour referred to was probably no more than getting to class late or having unpollished shoes, nothing like the poor behaviour of today where a teacher has to accept all kinds of abuse from the scro .... sorry delinquents.
