England could not possibly have played Scholes in that midfield? Where would he have fitted in? Gerrard & Parker were nailed on, so England would have needed to play 3 centrally and probably play one up front with the two wide men. Looking at the pace of some of the games I think ‘Ginge’ may have struggled. Ironically, Italy played the ‘United’ way with Pirlo the ball magnet and everything being channelled through him. So at International level it can be done? I think in hindsight Ginge was better off out of it – England was pretty dire. Unfortunately all the United lads had pretty poor tournaments. Young and Rooney were awful and Welbeck hardly got a kick and was ultimately disappointing, though you’d have to say the service to the strikers was pitiful. I personally found the Italian debacle embarrassing. I can’t recall any England side being so totally dominated for practically the whole game before?
