The overhead lines are electrified all the time, it's the signalling cabling that gets targeted, even though the majority of cables are now optical (or so I believe). Happened a couple of years ago at Crumpsall. The thieves left the optical cabling in the car park, but not before destroying the cables. Again delays to the service while replacement cable was sourced and repaired.
