Confidence is probably as important as avoiding dark alleys when it comes to avoiding street violence.
I have cited studies previously (I don't have them to had unfortunatly) where convicted attackers (muggers and sex attackers) were shown vidoes of street scenes and asked who they would target; they tended to pick the same people, generally those demonstrating a timid demeanor or lacking self confidence.
