I'm very pro-Metrolink, but the general philosophy behind the big bang expansion was to ensure Metrolink is now present in as many different areas as possible, rather than thinking about where the passengers would want to go. Perfect example is the Airport line, where tourists and locals trying to get to the city centre will have to travel through Wythenshswe, Benchill, Northern Moor, Chorlton and Old Trafford on their way.... guess that'll take twice as long as the train, and not far off the bus time....
