Travelled into Oldham today from the South Chadderton stop to see what it would be like, if I wasnt from Oldham. Have to say NOT impressed!! - When we arrived at Oldham Mumps, no baloons, no band playing, no council official, no one welcoming at all!!
I played dumb and asked one of the staff on the platform where to go. I asked him where Spindles was...His reply "Over the old blue bridge, up the road, turn left, follow your nose..."
I went over the old, rusty blue bridge over the bypass, and first building I see, Oldham Probation Service with 5 or 6 youths hanging outside, Felt I was going to get mugged there and then!!
I did my shopping in Oldham and returned. But when I got to the Oldham Side of the Old Blue Bridge, there was about 20 to 30, older persons who were not local to Oldham stood there wondering where to go. I personally took them onto Union Street and showed them where to go, making £10 in tips, lol.
Once I got on the tram home, I heard numerous people talking about how unwelcoming Oldham was, and not very signposted to find key places. And have to agree with them. Only sign I saw was one on the platform saying "Oldham Town Centre ==>".
Overall not impressed. Come on Oldham Council, you wanted this tram, get your tourism people down there pronto and welcome people to Oldham, becuase right now I feel going to the shop for some baloons, banners and some town map print outs and doing the job myself!
