My sister and I use to be part of the annual Whitsuntide walks from being small children to early teens we would get new clothes at Whitsun an annual treat, as we were all Church of England our church All Souls Church, Every Street, Ancoats walked on a Monday the Catholics would walk on a Whit Friday. I was in the Boy’s Brigade and I use to play the bugle, did we all think we were good, you bet. I remember we had a leading bugle player called Victor I can't remember his surname but he played all the solo's and very well he played them, while we ordinary players had brass bugle's Victor had a silver one.

We would set off from the All Souls Church on a Whit Monday morning and head for Albert Square, we would go down Great Ancoats St, on to Newton St, round Piccadilly, down Market St, to the town hall where all the churches from all area’s of Manchester would congregate and a service would take place. Then we would all walk back to our respected churches in a slightly different route. People would be stood on the pavements cheering and waving small flags and the next day my mother would buy the Evening News and the Evening Chron in later years it was just the Evening News to see if my sister and I had our photo in the paper.

After the walk’s we would go back to the school and tea, mineral, sandwiches and cake was laid on for the walker’s happy days, trouble free days, days that were drug free, days whole families enjoyed.
