She may be legally a minor however she is also entitled to patient confedentiality. This means that had she gone to her GP / hospital with the problem and decided to have the procedure on her own then the parents would never have been told. I have been a part of many cases where a minor has come into A&E and a pregnancy test has been carried out as standard procedure prior to treatment. The pregnancy test has resulted in a positive outcome and the patient has been told. Without the patients (minors) permision however we could not tell the parents. Therefore it is a good thing that the teachers were available for the young lady to talk to because although she could talk to healthcare professionals about the matter you can guarantee that they would not have the same connection with her as the teachers, whom see her almost everyday, would have.
