I'm not sure that the above cycnicism is justified. Most developed nations have established trauma networks and they have been shown to significantly improve mortality and morbidity in major trauma. If you have a serious head injury, it makes sense to be taken to a facility capable of providing neurosurgical input. Likewise if you have a cardiothoracic, orthopaedic or multisystem injury. The centralisation of trauma care allows facilities to see the requisite number of trauma cases in order to maintain the skills of the medical and nursing staff. I live in south east London. If it's a choice between a five minute ambulance to Queen Elizabeth, Woolwich or a twenty minute ambulance to the Royal London there's no contest i'm afraid. Would you rather bleed to death in a District General whilst waiting for another ambulance to take you to a facility capable of providing the specialist care you need or be taken straight to a trauma centre and managed efficiently and appropriately for the sake of an extra fifteen minutes in an ambulance?
