If you look at the make-up of United's squad, we currently have 27 players that would be considered over-21 for the purposes of next season's PL campaign. However, this includes Owen, Berbatov, Park, Fabio, De Laet and Bebe - all of whom must be at least a doubt to still be at United come August.
So there's plenty of room for Scholesy (and Giggs) to carry on without it restricting SAF's ability to bring in up to four new players (I expect a maximum of 3).
BTW, United's average age for the first-team squad us currently 25.1. This compares favourably to the 26.3 it was a year ago. So much for for our "ageing" squad. It might however be thought that we don't have enough players at their peak years of 25 to 30 - only five outfield players fit in that category (and one of those is Fletcher).
However if you exclude the six possible leavers, only Evra, Ferdinand, Giggs, Vidic, Carrick and Scholes are the wrong side of 30 and only Scholes and Giggs are over 33. So, yes, the squad is possibly too young (if that's possible) but that bodes well for the future.
