Like most, I think, I was surprised when Scholes came out of retirement. I was surprised at how apparently successful he was initially. I was not surprised to see him fall off at the end of his very short season, shades of last year. He has more personal and professional integrity in his little finger than the likes of Giggs has in his whole body. Let's hope he uses it to make the right decision and retires for good. Don't wait until, like Giggs, you can almost hear the groans when you see his name in the starting 11.

What should be of more concern to United fans is SAF's position on this. Does he really think that Scholes still "has it". Does he actually see what happens on the pitch - I mean that in the most literal sense, who can forget the picture of SAF, when United scored in one game last season, turning to Phelan and saying "who scored?". It's obvious in the seeing sense of understanding what's happening on the pitch he doesn't and hasn't for a while. If his faculties are not all there and no one is willing to say anything to him then United are in more trouble than one can imagine.
