It is alright for Butt to say that United had no other choice really than to pack the midfield to avoid being totally overrun by City's midfield but the root problem is Fergie's failure to buy two world class midfielders for the last two years. A team of United's stature and ambition must have quality midfielders who can hold their own against any other team., Given he had to do it, he still got his selection wrong. Valencia has played both as a full back and winger with some success and should have kept his place on the right side of midfield with instructions to play more defensively. At least he would have been there to launch some attacks as well and prevented Clichy to venture forward too often. With Carrick and Scholes in the middle, the left side of midfield would have been a choice among Park, Giggs and Young for their potential defensive contribution. To complete a 4 4 1 1 formation both Rooney and Welbeck would have played with the exception that Rooney would have been instructed to help more in midfield as he often does. Actually, depending on where Rooney was, it would have been a fluid change between 4 4 1 1 and 4 5 1. Losing to City is bad enough but to lose without a single shot on goal is a disgrace and Fergie should ask himself some serious questions before recruiting. Players like Gaitan and Hazard would improve the squad but this is not where Utd desperately need new faces. A holding midfielder like J. Martinez and a proven attacking midfielder should be the priority and United must pay what it takes to get them rather than hiding behind excuses like there is no value on the market. City did not pay peanuts for Silva and Toure and they have both been outstanding. Players like Sigurdsson can only be squad addition, nothing more!
