This may have been true some years ago but all applications are are now administered on an "Equal Preference" basis. Put simply it means all your preferences are considered so for example if a child is eligible for a place at 2 schools he/she is allocated the first preference School. One of the big advantages is that preferences can be expressed for a number of Schools as well as your nearest School as all application are considered equally.
