I see no mention if the other Tesco sites will close as a result of this store opening? Except the one close to this proposal of course.. There are three Tesco stores in Macclesfield, that’s enough already!
The Broken Cross store was forced through by one means or another, the local stores in that area did not need a Tesco!, that area and junction just did not need another Tesco.. It looks busy as I pass, the junction is much busier now, but I reckon it is because people cannot not be bothered to travel across town in the terrible traffic!
Why can we not have more variety, say Morrisons, Asda or bigger better Sainsbury? If we need a Tesco extra it’s a trip down the A34.. Handforth has the big M&S etc too.. so a store in Macc cannot compete with the draw Handforth provides... its 15mins max or Stockport, or Altrincham have the same...
Something about Tesco and Macclesfield is not right; too much interest in it being the ONLY choice… Quite frequently the choice in this store is very very poor. Empty shelves, prices steep and lack of desire to compete.. Between Tesco and Shell, fuel prices in the town are almost the same as rural town levels, bl**dy expensive!
This is because they (we) have no competition.
I know I know we have Sainsbury, M&S and Aldi.. (I visit all on occasion) But all are buried in the awkward road layout of the town centre... Modern time’s dictate we shop and drop stuff in our car ASAP.. so please sort the bl**dy road layout first and make it flow faster/smoother.. a town like Macc is crying out for a one way system!.. the only town with a bypass that actually bypasses b*gger all (well it actually takes traffic off the old Macc Road where some councillors used to squat).. For me it just gets you to the lights at Arighi quicker!!!!
Leek as a great Morrison’s, old store redeveloped, they are also getting a super purpose built brand new Sainsbury.. Ever think of Leek as a Peak town..? Well pop over with your cash and have a look see and spend some if it.. nice run too.. no traffic! (No I am not from Leek, Marple actually…)
Leek is in Staffordshire, their planning model and aspirations leave Macc in the dark ages.. Thanks Mr Winterton for emulating this in the boom years…. His wife appears to have supported Congleton in a much more appropriate way, it is a nice place to shop and visit… Why? Did the power breakfast briefings never include, “how are you improving the area darling?”… The cynic in me says it was probably all banter about how to fill expenses forms in, and boy did they know how to do that!
Leek also has a one way system that works well, and does the one in Congleton.. Why is Macc such a uniquely stubborn town for improvement? My guess is it is aspirational, yet so far behind some of the UK towns that have regenerated... During the boom years, where did the investment in Macc go?.. Is it all along the aptly named Winterton Way at Park Green??
Allowing Tesco in on the offer of 1000 car spaces.. and 300 jobs is pitiful.. Is this all they think we need..? Try some of our surrounding towns.. Say Hanley (closer than Stockport).. Exceptional choices of stores/facilities/cinemas/good dining.. as with Leek stores.. better value and prices.
The council and MP need to smell the manure here.. I for one am taking my money out this area to another county to spend in a more pleasant environment (I get a better experience and that’s all it is about given the doom everywhere)..
People (consumers) nowadays all seek “the experience” new generation will be more focused on this.. so it needs be addressed first rather than Tesco wooing with 1000 parking spaces and 300 jobs..
Purleeese.. That’s min wage jobs (no pay according to this weeks news !!!) so hardly letting these earners lavish it on the local economy is it!! (no slight at Tesco Macc staff intended whatsoever, some lovely people in there).. If Morrison’s pitched up, Tesco would have to up there game, wages, fuel prices, quality, stock selection, attitude toward consumers..
As always in Macc there is some form of under current or cartel..! Mr MP Rutley (ex senior ASDA Director) why is he not keenly opposing Tesco and pushing for a good competitor…? Coming from East Sussex is no background for knowing what our area really needs to move and catch up with 15 missed years of improvement and growth.. Watching his house of commoners speech is cringeworthy… parachuted into a safe seat with no local aspirations or knowledge..
I have wandered with my ramblings on this topic.. but for me it is SIMPLES, the solution that is!
PS – I best not start on about the Alderley bypass…. Although if you go through Alderley, you will have loads of time on your hands to think about it! In the traffic jam and queues that it… Wonder why there’s still a queue then?... I am off to The Poachers for a pint and the rugby… :)
