What a load of nonsense. Compact easy to carry with my other plastic cards (Unlike my passport), recognised by European officials who thought the UK may be moving into the 20th Century. Other European States have them compulsory, but this wasn't, just convenient for me and inexpensive. The cancellation is another result of our stupid 1st Past The Post electoral system.
If I am not mistaken some people will still be forced to have them - all of them non UK citizens!
