My Mum worked at a polling station, as she has for every election for over 10 years.

She is neither inept or inexperienced, neither were her 3 colleagues. Sweeping statement me thinks.

Mum said they had a queue when they opened, best turn-out ever and a hell of a lot of people turning up very late. Thankfully they managed to get through them all by 10pm.

Bottom line, go earlier!
