PARRENTHORN High School pupils were given a ‘Chance to Shine’ last week as they joined hundreds of other children taking part in a cricket camp charity initiative.

‘Chance to Shine’ cricket camps, which are led by the Cricket Foundation and supported by the British Army, are aimed at regenerating competitive cricket in state schools. Last week’s event was held at Monton and Weaste Cricket Club and saw pupils aged between 14 and 16 take part in a number of personal development activities designed to enhance physical and mental performance.

Developing batting, bowling and fielding skills were all on the agenda, as was plenty of fun on climbing walls which were provided by the Army for the occasion.

And the pupils were treated to a batting masterclass from international Test cricket legend Brendan Nash.

Army Major David Cook said: "Over the course of the few days, the pupils gained invaluable tips from the British Army and cricket coaches and we hope that the event may encourage them to play competitively in the future – helping to nurture not only one of Britain’s favourite sports but to develop our nation’s children."
