STAND are celebrating arguably the most successful weekend in the club’s history having beaten Roe Green by 31 runs in the Walkden Cup final and Irlam by seven wickets in the league.
But the three other local cricket clubs – Prestwich, Unsworth and Radcliffe – all had weekends to forget.
Stand came into their double-header reeling from back-to-back defeats.
But those defeats seemed distant memories when Stand skipper Paul Wilkinson lifted the Walkden Cup on Sunday.
It was Stand’s first trophy triumph in 48 years and came after they had posted a challenging total of 154 runs.
Stand were struggling on 104 runs for the loss of seven wickets at one stage despite a solid 23 from Chris Holt.
But number nine Gary Penchion came to their rescue with an unbeaten 20. However, the real star of the show was Stuart Catterall. He claimed five wickets for 21 runs Roe Green were skittled for 123 runs.
Carl Sutcliffe took the prized wicket of Roe Green professional Danny Jones, who scored just four runs.
Stand bowled even better at fellow Lees Brewery Lancashire County League strugglers Irlam the previous day.
They dismissed Irlam for just 57 runs, with professional Niranjan Kumara taking 6-28, before romping to a seven-wicket win.
In the same league, fifth-placed Prestwich lost at home to table-topping Denton St Lawrence by four wickets after being limited to 106-7.
In the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League, Unsworth’s and Radcliffe’s games against Walsden and Middleton were both abandoned due to heavy rain.
At the closes of play, seventh-placed Unsworth were on 216-9 chasing Walsden’s 229-3 and Middleton were on 141-6 chasing sixth-placed Radcliffe’s 161-run total.
Professional Wayne Madsen was unbeaten on 105 runs for Unsworth.
For Radcliffe, professional Usman Tariq hit 52 runs and Raza took 5-40.
