A Serial conman who was jailed FOUR times for ripping off hundreds of kind-hearted people has finally apologised – from his prison cell.
Mark Maskell repeatedly pretended he was doing a fund-raising parachute jump for The Wellspring homeless charity in Stockport.
Maskell, 25, knocked on doors across the borough asking for cash.
On every occasion he said he was collecting for The Wellspring – but they never received a penny, despite helping the trickster when he was homeless.
Now Maskell, who was jailed for four months In February after targeting a house in Heaton Chapel, has written an apology from his prison cell at Forest Bank prison in Salford.
He wrote: “I am writing to offer my apology to all the people around the Stockport area I tricked out of money and to the Wellspring’s homeless soup kitchen.
“I know what I did was wrong and I knew I deserved to go to prison again for what I did.”
Maskell was also jailed for four months in 2006, for four months in 2007 and 19-months in 2008 for burglary after he used the parachute jump ploy to talk his way into a house.
In the letter Maskell admits conning hundreds of people and apologises to ‘every single one’.
He also says sorry to his mum.
Maskell offers to do voluntary work for the Wellspring to make amends.
Conned
He adds: “I conned hundreds of people over the years and I apologise to every single one, especially my mum for seeing her son in the papers for these crimes. “I am going to walk out of this gate a changed person.”
But Wellspring manager Jonathan Billings dismissed Maskell’s apology and said he isn’t welcome.
Mr Billings said: “We would never have him as a volunteer at any time, now or in the future.”
He is also angry that the fraudster has been splashing his ‘party lifestyle’ all over Facebook.
He said: “If you look through his Facebook posts they completely contradict everything he has said in his letter.
“By reading his Facebook it’s clear to see he’s been leading quite a comfortable party lifestyle, not quite the harrowing sob story Maskell would have us all believe.
“The Wellspring would like to make clear that we would never welcome Maskell anywhere near our building.
“We would be concerned for Mark’s safety. At the end of the day it’s the homeless and disadvantaged people who attend the project that Maskell has ripped off.”
One of Maskell’s victims, who asked not to be named, said he agreed with The Wellspring.
“It doesn’t quite ring true,” he said. “I would find it hard to accept that letter as it seems a little bit too glib and I accept what the manager at The Wellspring says.”

Jailed 2006. jailed 2007, jailed 2008 and jailed 2010.I hope the charity sticks to its guns . Give this guy a genuine charity ID badge, how many more houses will he use it to get access to? Con artists don't have the empathy to feel sorry, they look directly in your eyes and lie to you.
He is ticking all the boxes to ensure a speedy objection free early release from the big house.

The Wellspring will provide Mark with services once he leaves prison, we will make referrals for him to get back into housing, if and only if he is rough sleeping. However Mark would not be able to attend the project, I can arrange for project staff to meet with him and make referrals for him to get him re housed again, if he is sleeping rough on the streets of Stockport our outreach team will come across him. We can also support Mark to find employment, though with his convictions this might be very difficult. But we will try. He may have ripped us off big time, but The Wellspring will not turn its back on any homeless person, if they are genuine and in need.
I must add that i completely disagree with your comment about him stealing £500 over a four year period. I don't think even Mark knows accurately how much money he has stolen. He has after all admitted to stealing from hundreds of people, do you think they all gave him 2 quid ? doubt it, very much.
Perhaps you could persuade him to repay The Wellspring financially ?
Regards
Jonathan Billings

But then I didn't give him any money, and, if the line he tried to spin me on a couple of occasions at my front door was the one he usually used, I'm amazed that anyone else did. His story just wasn't credible. I'm not surprised he's in prison yet again, if he's as bad at covering his tracks as he is at being a convincing fraudster!
This is a guy that'll never achieve a Riviera lifestyle on his con artistry. Just a cell.

Did you report this attempted deception to the police ? i urge you to do so, so further charges can be brought before Mr Maskell.

As for the others, I took the line that if I felt they were lying to me from the outset, I'd no idea whether anything I did for them would really help them, or just encourage them to continue a lifestyle devoted to leeching off their fellow human beings. So they usually got short shrift. Some fraudsters were amazingly plausible and imaginative in the stories they span, and I used to think - and sometimes tell them - that if they put as much effort and ingenuity into something more constructive, they might do quite well for themselves!
Maskell struck me as an unskilled, unpolished, hopeless and implausible con artist - at least to judge from the tale he told me - and I didn't seriously think anyone would fall for him. Apparently I was wrong; maybe he conjured up for others a better story than he managed for me, or maybe I gave too little thought to the old adage that a fool and his money are soon parted. But seeing that he's already been tried and convicted, I can't see a lot of point in me reporting my own experience. He was probably convicted on certain specimen charges out of the range of incidents reported, and I doubt they'll haul him back to court and give him another month inside for what he tried on me. The real lesson for people approached by guys like him is to keep your wits about you, ask some searching questions, and remember that, if it sounds like a con, it probably is a con. If you think that, say so, and shut the door on them.
