SADDLEWORTH stalwart Sonia Dunn came out on top in the battle for the OLGA past captains’ competition staged at Werneth.

Dunn posted an impressive 27 points in the 13-hole Stableford to finish well clear of Joan Swindells (Werneth), Margaret Butterworth (Crompton and Royton), Hazel Rogerson (Saddleworth) and Ann Lees (Oldham), all of whom were five points adrift of the winner.

Back at Saddleworth, their Australian Spoons foursomes was won by Barbara Shuttleworth and Julie Ward on 41 points.

More success for Saddleworth came from their fine juniors team who walloped Birchwood 6-1 to go through to the Manchester Alliance Williams BMW Junior Challenge final.

They will face Horwich at Lowes Park with their wins against Birchwood coming from Matthew Woolley, Jack Shaw, Rick Scholes, Jamie Heywood, Stephen Pullen and Ben Simpson.

Saddleworth’s seniors played for the FV Rhodes Trophy and Ray Dean won a cpo on 37 points from Phil Paxford.

The subsidiary competition was won by Steve Hodson (41).

The father and son team of Ian and Matt Radcliffe were on top in a betterball medal at Oldham posting 57 to finish two ahead.

Brookdale’s men enjoyed an invitation day and in top spot were Albert Brogan and S Shaw on 44.

Knockout finals at Crompton and Royton saw Andy Frizzell beat Mark Barrett to win the Highfield Cup in the men’s singles KO.

The four ball ‘Top Dogs’ victors were Rick Sweet and Andrew Simpson stroll to a 4/3 win over David Holme and Steve Bowers.

Marple once more hosted the Manchester Alliance competition for the Glenmuir Cup.

The main prizes were presented to Blackley’s dynamic duo of Julian Robinson and Alan Lane after they posted a superb 44 points.

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
