Twelve minutes into the second half and with the game goalless, he alerted referee Andy Haines to an apparent off-the-ball incident involving Latics' skipper Sean Gregan and Steve Morison.
Mr Haines duly took the play back 70 yards and awarded Millwall the penalty from which Neil Harris gave the visitors all three points.
It was harsh on an Oldham side who were punished for failing to take their chances after dominating the first half.
Having only taken nine points from the previous 36, Athletic created a plethora of first-half opportunities.
Keigan Parker, Pawel Abbott and Deane Smalley wasted the best of them before Harris opened the scoring.
Morison came close to doubling Millwall's lead when he struck Dean Brill's right-hand post and the keeper blocked Lewis Grabban's follow- up.
Five minutes of added time failed to yield an equaliser as Athletic lost for the eighth time in 13 matches.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.

The Board, the manager and players are all being blamed. That's some judgement.
