AFTER last weekend’s exciting finish to the Ashton and Oldham Cricket Alliance league season, last weekend’s cup games disappointing fell foul of the weather.
Heyside staged the final of the Fawcett/Penney Supplementary Cup, and in a game reduced to 30 overs, Heyside won the toss and invited Greengate to bat.
After the loss of an early wicket an excellent partnership between Clark (57) and Simpson (48) steered Greengate to a useful score.
As the wet weather was arriving they declared on 167-6 with Robinson (3-31) and Topping (2-37) the main wicket taker for Heyside.
However, with no further play possible, it went to a bowl-out with Simpson and Hanmer hitting the stumps for Greengate.
In contrast, no Heyside player hit the stumps which saw Greengate lift the trophy.
It was also semi-final day in the Phoenix Trophy but both games fell foul of the weather.
At Foresters, Newtonhurst batted first and an unbroken partnership between Boyle (80) and Simpson (39) saw them 174-4 from 29 overs before rain intervened.
Again a bowl-out decided the match, Newtonhurst winning 2-1 with Stone and Simpson hitting the stumps to take their team through to the final.
In the other game, Friends batting first against Radclyffe, recovered from 24-6 to reach 132 despite Wright taking the first six wickets for only 12 runs.
Radclyffe’s reply was cut short by the weather, and with their score on 22-4, the match was abandoned and the game decided by the toss of a coin.
That went the way of Radclyffe which saw them go through to the final at Ashton CC’s Rayner Lane ground this Saturday. Wickets are pitched at 1.30pm.
