Up on the Roof is coming to a close this weekend. The successful production has really up- lifted the whole building. The sounds of Band of Gold and Lean on Me continue to resonate around the theatre with Coliseum staff humming in the corridors.
If you haven’t had a chance to catch the acapella musical then make sure you come along before it ends on Saturday.
Next on the Coliseum stage is Men of the World, brought to us by Hull Truck Theatre Company who produced Ladies Down Under in 2008.
Men of the World is written and directed by John Godber, who wrote the alpine ski comedy On the Piste which opened the autumn /winter season last year. Men of the World is another holiday-based comedy.
This time the Austrian winter wonderland is swapped for a coach making its way down the Rhine Valley. Stick, Frank and Happy Larry are long-suffering coach drivers who have seen it all and they get together to reminisce about trips from the past.
Three actors will take on the roles not only of the coach drivers, but the eccentric passengers as well. Dicken Ashworth plays Larry, a Mario Lanza fan. Dicken has been at the Coliseum before as Danny in the 2005 production of Brassed Off. Passenger Hating Stick is played by Robert Angell, who is a Hull Truck regular, and Sarah Parks steps into the shoes of Frank, the only female. Sarah was at the Coliseum as recently as last year, playing Josie in Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis. Men of the World is only here from May 4-8 so make sure you catch before it continues on its tour of the country.
Outside the theatre there is another Coliseum@ production coming up at University Campus Oldham. Clunk conjures up an interesting world full of mutinous rag-toys, domestic wormholes and poignant forgotten dreams. The production will involve a mix of puppetry, humour and performance.
Certainly worth a look, call the Coliseum box office to book your ticket on 0161 624 2829. Elsewhere, Rachel Sears, creative development officer at the Coliseum, has been working closely with nine young people from the Rathbone Centre who are working towards their bronze arts award.
The young people are all on a e2e course which stands for education to employment and helps young people who are not yet ready for an apprenticeship programme but would like to build up skills to improve their employability.
The bronze arts award is part of this course. It involves the group participating in art classes and developing skills to teach others. Skills like these are invaluable when looking for employment after education and it’s great that the Coliseum can help people in the local area improve their career prospects for the future.
