Death threats over mistaken identity

Julie Keller

AN Oldham woman who has received dozens of death threats following Saturday’s political demonstrations in Manchester says she is the victim of mistaken identity.

Julie Keller has been bombarded with hundreds of disturbing emails and phone calls after it was claimed she used a megaphone during a two-minute silence for British troops, which was part of a protest by the English Defence League.

Julie says she has been targeted in the mistaken belief that she is a member of the Unite Against Fascism group who clashed with the EDL during the five-hour demonstration.

Julie, a community campaigner from Hollinwood, said: "I am not and never have been a member of the UAF.

"I went to the protest because I was interested in what was going on and whether it posed any danger to Oldham.

"I did not speak during the silence because I would never disrespect British troops."

Julie says that the threats began shortly after she gave an interview to a news channel condemning the police for their behaviour during the protests.

Within hours her contact details were posted on the EDL’s website along with claims that she was the same woman on the megaphone.

As well as terrifying death threats, a Facebook group called Julie Keller UAF Scum has been set up containing her photograph and email address, and more than 100 vile messages have been posted.

Julie is now contacting the social-networking site to have the group removed.

She said: "I have received a lot of threats and it is frightening.

"I want to set the record straight that I have nothing to do with UAF.

"I am not that person on that tannoy. This is a case of mistaken identity."

A police spokesman confirmed that they are aware of the threats and enquiries are ongoing.

The EDL, who have an Oldham branch, claim to oppose ‘Muslim extremism’.

  • AROUND 2,000 people took part in the demonstration and there were 47 arrests. Two Fitton Hill men – Kevin Greaves, 30, of Springwood Hall Road, and James Crangle, also 30, of North Croft – were among four people charged with public order offences. They were due to appear at Manchester City Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
