Oldham Interfaith Forum is urging borough residents to use their votes wisely and keep out extremists in the forthcoming European elections.
The forum, which represents all faiths in Oldham, is urging people to vote next Thursday and prevent ‘far right’ groups gaining seats.
The European elections feature proportional representation, which makes it easier for smaller parties to gain seats – and lower turnouts mean less votes are needed.
In a statement, the Forum says: "Many people, after the recent conduct of some of our MPs, may want to withhold their vote as a protest.
"However, withholding a vote may assist a party which could be even more destructive. The British National Party (BNP) only needs 8.5 per cent of the votes cast to gain a seat in the North West.
"Oldham is a diverse community. Our diversity is a strength and we need to do all we can to maintain it. The Forum rejects the demonization of any part of our community on the basis of faith or race, and refutes the claims of the BNP to speak for the Christian faith.
"Their message is a travesty of the Christian faith, an insult to other faiths and a danger to our Borough.
"In words attributed to Edmund Burke, ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’. Therefore, the Interfaith Forum urges all Oldhamers to use their vote."

Lets remember here that over the course of History .... just how many wars have been started due to religion ..... KEEP RELIGION AND POLITICS APART !!!, With all the Church scandals of abuse over the years is it not time the Church put its own house in order before accusing others ??????

A short time googling reveals scant detail on the OIF, that being that the ‘Lead Person’ is Mr Fazal Rahim, and that the sum of it’s achievements has been concerned only with children in organising trips to mosques for kids of different religions and school workshops on the same.
How does a childrens religious harmony ‘organisation’ qualify to speak on your front page on such a contentious issue as voting advice, or rather, voting dissuasion of a legal party listed on the Electoral Register?
This is little more than a Council tax funded ‘paper’ organisation having a clearly racially biased agenda, solely in order that the Council can tick off it’s box for being multi-culturally diverse.
The statement is a cheap pot-shot at the BNP from some single, council tax funded spokesperson of a so-called interfaith organisation. Your editorial choice of it’s placement shows your publication for what it is, either colluding in anti-democracy or ignorantly not researching properly beforehand.
Do you, as a newspaper, not credit the British public with the intelligence to choose themselves?
Finally, I find the un-named spokespersons reference to Burkes’ ‘good men do nothing’ passage in this context to be completely perverse.

Thank you for shedding some light on the origins of this organisation, it certainly helps one to see how biased they are .......

The BNP said it would have been better if he'd been killed at birth: "There is actually not a great deal of point in keeping these sort of people alive, after all.”
I'm a lifelong Oldhamer too, and these creeps make me sick. The BNP is not like any other UK political party. The BNP’s favoured methods are not canvassing or voting – they are violence and fear. The BNP is racist and believe in an all white Britain. This would
mean no black players in our national sports
teams, no black musicians, no black nurses,
no Asian doctors and surgeons, no black or
Asian faces in public life.
The BNP build support by whipping up hatred against every minority – just as
Hitler targeted Jewish people. But, like the
Nazis, if the BNP ever came to power they would strip every person in this country of their rights and freedoms.
Don't fall for the lies.

However, your comment was no more than a rant on the "evil, nazi, racist (add your own usual expletive here)" BNP. It did not either a/ comment on the article or b/refute or debate a single point of my comment.
Who exactly IS doing the scaremongering here? More you than I.
No more than a rant, and lies at that, clearly you have not even researched yourself or studied a BNP manifesto, I advise you do.

You can read the comments on killing disabled children made by Jeffrey Marshall, BNP organiser for the European Elections campaign here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/may/31/bnp-european-elections-facebook-expose
I think I remember another lot who were keen on murdering disabled children, now who were they again? Oh yes, the Nazis: http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/crips-column/2007/01/disabled-nazis-germany-program
As for the original article itself, what's your problem with it exactly? Why shouldn't any organisation, especially one that's dedicated to improving race/faith relations, point out that a vote for the BNP is incompatible with it's mission?
If you think otherwise then you're pefectly free to do so, and the rest of us are equally free to point out you're a fool.
If you think I've said anything that is a lie then by all means point it out. However there's plenty of evidence on the BNP's own website that they believe in an all-white Britain, and I would suggest you read sites such as Searchlight or Unite against Fascism, or indeed any mainstream newspaper for more evidence of the sheer ****-wittery of the BNPs supporters and policies.
So, no lies, no scaremongering - just simply the facts.
