THE Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Oldham has played host to thousands of local residents over the years, and more than 2,500 visited last week.

Celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the Lee Street facility attracted large crowds, who enjoyed a variety of activities suitable for all age groups.

Shashi Gorasia, of the management committee, said: "The people who managed the temple were first generation Indian’s who moved to Britain. The majority of these arrived in the 1960s or even before then."

But it wasn’t just Oldham residents who were drawn to the celebrations, with some guests coming from London and Cardiff, as well as VIP guests from India.

Shashi added: "The Mayor, councillors and even Indian head priests came along. Our aim was to draw hundreds of visitors, display Indian culture and involve the local community. The event had been in the planning for more than 12 months and we are delighted with how it went."
