The four-goal triumph over the seven-times European Cup winners will go down as one of Manchester United's finest European achievements.
Once the fuss over David Beckham's green and gold exit and another two goals for Wayne Rooney has died down, the record books will show a superb aggregate win over a fellow heavyweight that in the short-term has dispelled any remaining concerns about United's ability to challenge for major honours this season.
Ferguson recognises the enormity of the result. But, ahead of Sunday's encounter with Fulham, the Scot is also eager to introduce a note of caution.
"We have to calm ourselves down a little bit," he said.
"It was an emphatic result on Wednesday but they lost Alessandro Nesta on the morning of the game and then lost their centre-back at half-time. That made it difficult for them.
"It is the same as when we played Fulham a couple of months back. We had no centre-backs, so what do you expect?"
What the week's results did do was place a sense of perspective over Ferguson's refusal to spend the vast majority of that world record £80million received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo form
One of the arguments put forward by the Manchester United Supporters Trust for their opposition to the Glazer family's ownership of the club is that their massive debt prevented Ferguson plunging into the transfer market.
It is a claim which has been denied by senior figures within Old Trafford, including Ferguson himself, who stressed he has been put off by the vast prices being quoted for players little better than the ones he already has.
That inflation was fuelled by Real and Manchester City. City have known since last month there would be no end to their 34-year wait for a trophy - the Carling Cup semi-final defeat to United being part of the wreckage - whilst the sight of Ronaldo shaking his head as he made his way off at the Bernabeu in midweek after Champions League elimination to Lyon was further proof money does not automatically buy success.
"Spending money never has guaranteed you anything," said Ferguson. "It is not always the case it doesn't. But it is never a certainty.
"I am just glad that we are into the next stage. That is all we need to concern ourselves with.
"But I am disappointed for Ronaldo not having qualified. We had someone at the game and the report was he was absolutely fantastic.
"In my mind I had a thought that somewhere along the line we were going to meet them and Ronaldo would be up against us. We would have needed a machine gun to stop him.
"But it just shows you what European football is like. You get tricky games.
"Bayern Munich, Lyon and Arsenal are already through, plus either Chelsea or Inter and probably Barcelona, so there is not going to be an easy game now."
What do you think? Have your say.

If i were a betting man i would say our scout's were hoping to watch Karim Benzema as i feel he may well be coming in a swap deal for Vidic.

Danny was also quiet when Shawcross was called up to the England squad. 2 chances in the space of a week to say how terrible the manager is and he didn't take either. They may have upped his dosage!!

Solskjaer20Legend, don't see Higuain being the one.
Drago, it's possible we were there to look at Benzema but scouting the Madrid reserve games might be better! I honestly don't see us doing a swap deal. It doesn't seem to be something United like doing. If Vidic's contract negotiations go the wrong way and SAF decides to get rid, then I think he'd be sold to the highest bidder, rather than used in a swap. I don't think Real Madrid would be the highest bidders. My view, though, is that a last minute deal will be sorted with Vidic and he'll stay.

momentum. I love watching us play with tempo. I think everyone plays much more solidly as a unit. Plus, I really like the one off flicks, touches and inside passes.
I know we can grind out results and we will probably have to do that in a few games. But we are all United fans and we love the good stuff! I can take substance over style in some games but style and substance...... bring it on. It's exciting, being a Red.

Yes, you are spot on, Manu Expert, Fergie will be delighted that United will not have to face Real - but only because of Ronaldo. He'll be a helluva lot more chuffed, too, if Arsenal and Chelsea go out in the next round. Why shouldn't he be? Better an 'easy' run to the Bernabau than a difficult one.
On the other hand, MACBRIAN 52 clearly does not know what the Great Man is all about, which is about building teams that will compete at the very highest level and not nurturing the cult of the individual. When he looks at players and visualises what they will contribute, it's the 'team' that's foremost in his mind.
He clearly did not believe Pique, Forlan, Rossi, Campbell, Simpson, Higgenbotham and Thornley were United's future. That's why he shifted them. And, if you believe they are world class, you've been watching a different game from me. Tell me, MACBRIAN, are world class Campbell, Simpson, Higgenbotham and Thornley in contention for a place in the England setup?
Wednesday's destruction of Milan was a team effort from start to finish. This whole season has been about team effort. And no one epitomises the United team ethic more than Wayne Rooney. From the start of the season, United's quality and commitment has been called into question by football writers and TV pundits, most of them predicting United would not be able to sustain a challenge for trophies because they would miss Ronaldo too much, and because of injuries to the likes of Vidic, Ferdinand and Giggs, etc.
Well, here we are, top of the Premiership and favourites to reach a third, successive Champion's League final. The fact is, United are now the most feared team in Europe and Rooney the most feared player - including Messi and Barcelona. They are not that because Cristiano Ronaldo is still leading the attack. He is now part of a cabal of astronomically priced and overpaid Galacticos who, in comparison to United, can best be described as a non-team. Yes, he was magnificent against Lyon - but the proof of that match was that one man does not and never shall make a team. And, when we look back to the period of two other Real Galacticos, Zidane and Figo, the team of their day didn't exactly set Europe alight. Football writers and pundits predicted that Real team would lift a succession of La Liga's and Champion's League trophies. It didn't because for the most part it was comprised of individuals who did not completely gel as a team.
Rooney has risen to every occasion this season as part of the team - albeit, I have to admit, the most important cog in it. But other players have also lifted their games when needed, Scholes and Giggs magnificent. And, what about that old has-been, Gary Neville, who can best be described as Fergie on the pitch. He is so slow and useless nowadays that there is universal talk about his recall to the England World Cup squad - from the pundits who wrote him off a few months ago!
If football managers worldwide want to know about a pure team ethic, let them spend a few days witnessing a Fergie masterclass at Carrington.
