FLASH flooding hit Greater Manchester as storms broke up a weekend of glorious sunshine.

The region's emergency services received a number of reports of flooding on Saturday night, including problems  at Manchester City's stadium.

Firefighters were called to Eastlands at 8.20pm after part of the ground's east stand was flooded.

Fire crews spent four hours on site pumping water from a function room which had become flooded with surface water from surrounding car parks and waterways.

Roads became impassable to traffic on part of the Mancunian Way, near its junction with Ashton Old Road, just outside Manchester city centre.

One lane was closed off by police due to the flooding on Saturday night.

Part of Alan Turing Way remains closed today  after severe flooding across both carriageways caused manhole covers to split and five inches of sewage to spill out, contaminating the water.

Police were alerted to the floods, between Asda and Oldham Road, at 7.20pm last night and are working to make the area safe.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Jon Aspinall, spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Our call centre had quite a number of calls reporting pockets of flash flooding across the region but none have caused serious problems.

"If there are floods on roads in your area we advise you to contact the Highways Agency.

"If it's affecting your home and there's a risk it will affect the electrics contact us, otherwise we ask you to contact a salvage company."
